Upskilling Leaders

Effective school leadership

Effective schools and organisations have many leaders! When you systematically build leadership at all levels, then your staff will be well supported. Responsibilities can be shared around rather than resting on the shoulders of a few. And when someone leaves, you can be sure that you have already developed talented people to replace them. Our data from over 100,000 coaching conversations has identified some critical leadership mindsets that support leaders at different levels.

Mindsets for headteachers

As a headteacher you are likely to be juggling many priorities, and may find yourself challenged around different aspects of your own leadership – so a flexible coaching programme may best meet your needs.

A few critical leadership mindsets come to the fore in the headteacher role. Creating a clear vision for school improvement is important, and you may be unsure of how to sensitively challenge old ways of working, and how quickly to pace any changes. You may be keen to create a more collaborative culture, sharing leadership with your team and delegating responsibilities. But empowering people can be fraught with problems, and it may not always be easy to let go and trust others.

Mindsets for deputy/ assistant headteachers

Deputy and assistant headteachers can easily feel sandwiched between the headteacher and school staff. Getting clear on your core values can help you to navigate these pressures, and ensure that you develop a clear leadership style of your own. As you build your self-awareness, you may find it helpful to get clear on your Mindtraps – the limiting beliefs that may impinge on both your leadership effectiveness and your personal resilience.

You may also benefit from developing techniques to help with any difficult conversations you may need to have – with staff or with parents, for example – or from learning how to build capabilities and set impactful development goals with key staff members at your school.

Mindsets for heads of departments

Effective heads of department are great people leaders. You need to know how to engage your team, how to hold people to account and how to bring more challenging people on board.

To ensure consistent standards of teaching across your department, you are often required to hold regular coaching and feedback conversations with your teachers, building their capability and practice. And throughout all of this, you need to have the self-confidence to assert your leadership when necessary.

Mindsets for new team leaders

Making the move into a leadership role can be daunting, however confident you are as a teacher. We set you up for success by strengthening your personal leadership.

Building your self-awareness and growth mindset are key as you start to imagine yourself as a leader. You may need to hone your communication skills so you can collaborate more effectively with a wide range of colleagues, and ensure everyone feels included and valued. You may be naturally proactive, but perhaps also need to reflect on how and when to step-up and take a more leading role as new, and potentially unexpected situations arise.

Mindsets for principals

Principals are juggling many priorities and may find themselves challenged in many different aspects of their own leadership – so a flexible coaching program may best meet your needs.

Build leadership capacity within your school or trust

Developing leadership in your school or across your trust or organisation is one of the best ways to invest in your school or trust's future. BTS Spark leadership programmes help leaders to make meaningful and sustained changes in their leadership practice, so they can enhance their impact and influence, step in more confidently to deal with problems, and champion the school or trust vision and priorities.

Coachees will be supported to reflect deeply on their leadership style and key aspects of their practice, and encouraged to apply the new strategies they learn to the live challenges they are facing right now in their leadership roles.

One-to-one leadership coaching enables individuals to fast track their leadership with support from a professional leadership coach.

Different programmes are available for middle or new team leaders, heads of department, deputy/assistant headteachers, aspiring headteachers and headteachers. Offering these programmes for a group or cohort of leaders will ensure your leaders build a shared leadership language and toolkit. Alternatively, each individual leader can enrol in their own bespoke, flexible programme.

Where budgets are tighter, a group coaching programme is a great way to strengthen relationships amongst a group of leaders, and enable them to support and learn alongside each other. For larger groups –and to cascade learning to wider staff teams – leadership workshops, or a series of twilight sessions, are another great option.
